saveMIcity News Conference Set for Tuesday; Watch the Livestream

The Michigan Municipal League is having a news conference Tuesday (Jan. 24, 2017) related to our saveMIcity work and Governor Rick Snyder’s recent State of the State address. We will livestream the news conference and we encourage all League members, as well as the public and media not in the Lansing area, to watch it as it happens 1 p.m. Tuesday. View it at saveMIcity.org. If you have questions during the event, tweet them to #saveMIcity.

During the news conference, we will outline some of our work done through this saveMIcity initiative in the past year and we will specifically address some of the issues raised in the State of the State. We’ll also talk about some of our legislative priorities for the upcoming year.

If you missed it, Governor Snyder said some pretty interesting things during the SOS address Tuesday (Jan. 17, 2017), including talk about how “placemaking is a critical priority” and that Michigan needs “vibrant places to work, to play, to live.” He went on to explain how Michigan’s communities are our most important asset in the state and that “good communities lead to good states”. As best as we can remember, this is the first time (out of seven SOS speeches he’s done) where the Governor specifically talked about the value of placemaking. These are all things we’ve been saying for years – that our communities are economic drivers for the state.

Governor Snyder speaks to the Michigan Municipal League Board in 2011.

We also agree with the Governor that looking at restructuring our legacy costs is an important issue to address in the coming session. We look forward to working with him and the Legislature to address retirement issues and to fix the state’s broken system for funding municipalities, because our current system simply does not track with the economy. We must provide communities the tools they need to operate more efficiently and attract talent necessary for Michigan’s economic recovery.
