Today, the Michigan Municipal League is taking our ongoing SaveMICity initiative to the next level. Those who support Michigan cities, villages, townships and counties, may already know that Michigan hasn’t been investing in our communities. In fact, our state is dead last. That’s evident in our crumbling streets, cuts to fire and police protection, and ongoing struggle to pay for other crucial services. Our system for funding our municipalities is broken and doesn’t track with the economy. We must reform our system to invest in what matters most: Our communities.

Thanks to support from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, the League and our partner organizations and supporters are enhancing our SaveMICity education campaign to further raise awareness of the need for municipal finance reform.

We’re launching this newly expanded SaveMICity effort this week at Mackinac Policy Conference. This work includes updating our savemicity.org website with fresh content, creating a new informative animated video that we hope you share with your residents, and launching new SaveMICity Facebook and Twitter pages that we’d like you to join.

This renewed focus on educating the public and decision makers will include:

  • A new 3-minute animated video (watch above) that creatively explains why and how Michigan’s system for funding its municipalities is broken. Watch here on YouTube.
  • A strong presence at the Detroit Regional Chamber’s Mackinac Policy Conference with a conference session titled “Not Open for Business: Why Disinvestment in Michigan Cities Is Hampering Economic Opportunity,” sponsored by the Mott Foundation and taking place this morning (Wednesday, May 30) at the Grand Hotel. We will share the link to the session recording once the Chamber makes it available, but you can follow along on Twitter at @savemicity and by using the hashtags #MPC2018 and #savemicity.
  • An updated social media presence on Facebook and Twitter. Please take a moment to like and follow.
  • Media interviews highlighting our message. We’re already getting media coverage over this work, including this week’s Detroit Free Press piece, this WDIV article and a related  story on WDET public radio.
New SaveMICity Twitter and Facebook pages.

We’ll continue to post updates on our campaign on this SaveMICity blog. In the meantime, the Michigan Municipal League encourages our supporters to personalize the overall message with examples of how the state’s lack of investment has impacted their community.

Here is a link to talking points League members and supporters can use when discussing this issue with state legislators, fellow locally elected officials and residents.

The Michigan Municipal League looks forward to a successful campaign that yields results for all Michigan residents so they can love where they live.

If you have questions or would like the SaveMICity message presented in your community, please contact us at savemicity@mml.org.
