In this session, sponsored by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, the focus was fixing Michigan’s broken system for financing municipalities. As Michigan looks to create greater economic opportunities and attract top talent from around the world, investing in cities must remain a top priority. However, the state continually ranks dead last in the country for funding infrastructure and services that improve citizens’ overall quality of life.

The Michigan Municipal League’s Anthony Minghine participates in the panel discussion.

Panelists included Chris Coleman, former mayor of St. Paul, Minnesota; Gordon Krater, partner and former managing partner of Plante Moran, and Anthony Minghine, chief operating officer and deputy executive director of Michigan Municipal League. Each of them shared their views on Michigan’s broken municipal financing system and the value of vibrant communities to the state’s economy. The goal of the session was to lay the groundwork for a statewide education campaign calling for a funding model that encourages renewed investment in communities.
